Trèfle-Blanc ice rink: launch of the architectural competition

At the beginning of 2022, the Grand Council voted the study credit for the construction of the Trèfle-Blanc ice rink in Lancy. A new important stage begins next week with the launch of the architectural competition. Scheduled for completion at the end of 2028, the infrastructure will include two ice surfaces, one of which will have a capacity of 8,500 seats, as well as 24,000 m² of activity space.
On January 28, the Grand Council voted by a large majority a study credit of 11.7 million francs for the construction of the Trèfle-Blanc ice rink in Lancy. This study credit made it possible to develop the competition brief, which now materializes with the launch of an architectural competition.
This is a crucial stage in the process of delivering this infrastructure. Participants in the competition will be required to submit their final proposals by August 2023, and the winning project will be announced in autumn 2023. The jury, composed of nineteen members, is chaired by Mr. Francesco Della Casa, cantonal architect. The launch of this competition follows six months of technical studies carried out in close collaboration with the City of Lancy and the future resident club, the Genève-Servette Hockey Club (GSHC).
This large-scale project will meet high standards in terms of spatial planning. With its large forecourt, the Trèfle-Blanc project aims to create a public square that benefits the surrounding neighborhoods. It provides for generous spaces dedicated to soft mobility and promoting urban quality. The development of public spaces will be carried out in close consultation with the City of Lancy in order to ensure their purpose and relevance.
Pooling the needs of the GSHC and the general public
In addition to planning aspects, the competition brief places central importance on the principles of sustainable development and aims to be exemplary in ecological matters. In this context, participating architectural firms are encouraged to submit projects incorporating advanced thinking on the integration of ecological materials, landscape design and biodiversity. Furthermore, particular attention will be paid to minimizing the building’s energy needs, as well as to the use of renewable energy produced on site. The Trèfle-Blanc project is part of an ambitious energy concept and aims to achieve energy neutrality.
Finally, details regarding the operation of the future infrastructure have also been included in the competition brief. Operational planning has been carried out with the support of external experts and fully meets the needs of the future main tenant, namely the GSHC, while allowing shared use with schools, local clubs and the general public.
