Architectural competition for the new ice rink: a third round required

The jury of the architectural competition for the new Trèfle-Blanc ice rink has decided to proceed with an additional refinement round before selecting the winning project. This stage, which will make it possible to differentiate between three projects, has no impact on the construction timeline of the infrastructure, expected for 2028.
The jury of the architectural and public space competition for the new ice rink met last week to determine the project that best meets the criteria defined for the future Trèfle-Blanc venue. These include high standards in terms of spatial planning, careful attention to the needs of the Genève-Servette Hockey Club and, more generally, to amateur sports, generous spaces dedicated to soft mobility and promoting urban quality, as well as a central focus on sustainable development.
At the end of closed-door sessions, the jury unanimously agreed on the need to request clarifications and further developments from three projects, which already present very high architectural quality. This refinement round will make it possible to select a project that fully meets the criteria defined in the competition brief.
Although this third round extends the duration of the architectural competition, which was launched in September 2022, the construction schedule of the new ice rink is in no way affected. This refinement round will last four months. The clarifications and developments now requested from the project teams, which remain anonymous at this stage, will in any case take place during the building permit phase. Put simply, the time allocated to this third round will be offset in a later phase of the schedule.
For the jury, chaired by the cantonal architect Francesco Della Casa, the new ice rink project requires strict attention to the standards mentioned above, as well as to the imperatives of efficient and financially viable operation. This refinement round is therefore commensurate with the stakes involved and with the need for the canton of Geneva to see an infrastructure of excellence built.
